If, like me, your knowledge of libidinous French chanteur Serge Gainsbourg is limited to digging his records and crushing hard on his daughter (yes – even after witnessing her snip her bits off in Antichrist) then come lend an ear, because Melbourne’s ACMI has announced a comprehensive cinema retrospective dedicated to the legendary performer.
In a season spanning Thursday October 7 through Tuesday October 19, Je t’aime: the filmic lives of Gainsbourg and Birkin presents thirteen feature films each featuring either Gainsbourg himself; his muse, lover and co-star, Jane Birkin; or the pair’s daughter, actor/musician/thinking-person’s-crumpet, Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Highlights include the Australian premiere of the documentary Gainsbourg and His Girls; the surreal new biopic Gainsbourg, which marks the feature directorial debut of French comics artist Joann Sfar; and for those seeking something a little less haute chic, Seven Deaths in the Cat’s Eye, Antonio Marghereti’s schlocky Italian murder mystery that places Birkin and Gainsbourg on opposite sides of the law and promises “secret vampires, a killer cat, a wild ape and a sexy French teacher.”
