Each month we ask a lecturer/academic from Australia to introduce one of their students or a student design team to the design industry.
Student design team: Stephen Au, Diana Chirilas, Anne Dahlin, Helgi Kormaksson, Ben Mayo, Paul O’Connor, Elizabeth Robb, Whitney Smarz and Sophie Zetterberg.
Lecturer: Leanne Rule, Project Space and industry liaison manager for Billy Blue College of Design.
The student design team was selected by the college to work on its annual journal, BBetween (Edition 3) as part of their studies. The group was asked to identify key skill-sets among each other and to organise team roles. We collaborated with the renowned strategy and design firm Second Road, which allowed the students to be mentored throughout the project by talented industry professionals. The students worked through all stages of production, from building the conceptual framework to visually responding to articles, content structure, design and pre-press. The outcome was the creation of a journal that is not only relevant for designers and educators, but also an extremely insightful read for business leaders (our clients), successfully breaking the trend of designers speaking only to designers. This experience, plus others while studying at Billy Blue, has allowed these students (who have since graduated) to enter the workforce armed with the necessary confidence, strategy and design skills required by the industry today.
