London-based publisher, GraphicDesign& has brought together 70 leading designers and typographers for its latest project (and first release), Page 1: Great Expectations.
Described as a ‘typographic experiment of sorts’ it’s a paperback book which includes 70 different typographic interpretations of the first page of Charles Dickens’ novel Great expectations (as a way to celebrate the bicentenary of Dickens’ birth). This text was chosen because it directly references lettering as the character Pip searches for clues about his family from the letterforms inscribed on their tombstone.
Contributors could respond in any way that they wished and were encouraged to, “explore, challenge or simply celebrate the conventions of book typography.” Each layout is accompanied by a short rationale explaining the designer’s decision-making process.
APFEL, Phil Baines, Tony Brook, Cartlidge Levene, Tony Chambers, William Drenttel and Jessica Helfand, Experimental Jetset, Fraser Muggeridge, KarlssonWilker, Frith Kerr, Robin Kinross, Ellen Lupton, Luke Hayman, Morag Myerscough, Erik Spiekermann, and Sam Winston.
