Per Square Metre gallery to close

Per Square Metre gallery in Melbourne will be closing its doors at the end of this month – a sad day for all of its fans and indeed the local art scene.

Set up in 2006 to fill a gap in the commercial gallery market- that of an affordable, accessible, 100% artist run space, the gallery’s main goal was to promote, inspire and motivate underground, up-and-coming and amateur artists, helping them to break into the commercial market.

In a statement, the gallery owners claimed the closure was due to “forseen circumstances with dodgy landlords and the general gentrification of Collingwood” and that the gallery would be closed until “a new suitable premises can be found to continue bringing you some light love and liquor.”

To celebrate the end of an era, which spanned four and a half years and saw over two hundred exhibitions by Australian and International artists, Per Square Metre is hosting one final exhibition, fittingly by co-owners and artists – Dvate and Sear.

  1. This is a very sad day indeed. There have been so many great exhibitions at this space. Another sad, sad day for Collingwood! Maybe whoever is re-opening the Tote knows who might be able to save it … but I guess no one really cared eh.
