RMIT farewells its print training centre

RMIT University has made the decision to close the International Centre of Graphic Technology (ICGT), its training centre for pre-press, printing and print finishing techniques.

The decision stems from the evolving education industry and a decline in the need for print-specific training. John Barnes RMIT’s director TAFE and vice-president further explains the situation: “Unfortunately, the printing industry has been experiencing long term difficulties in sourcing apprentices. In turn, this has cut numbers at the ICGT to the point where its activities are no longer viable.” Barnes is currently consulting with print industry stakeholders and is hopeful that a niche training organisation will be developed.

The Centre will continue on for the next 18 months, with all existing programs taught until completion.
