Schoolhouse Studios in Abbotsford, Melbourne has long been the residence of over 75 artists and creatives. With its upcoming destruction (at the end of 2012) and the displacement of those involved, founders Elizabeth Barnett and Alice Glenn will be curating a two-week, site-wide exhibition in conjunction with Melbourne Festival.
The exhibition, Place of Assembly, will bring together all of the creatives in residence, along with 12 guest artists to celebrate the history of the 120-year-old history of the site – the former site of the Monastery and Sophia Mundi Steiner School. The site offers artists, curators and its audience a rare opportunity to be stimulated and engaged in art forms, to actualise works that would not be possible in conventional galleries or exhibition spaces.
Featured artists include: Beth Arnold, Katie Lee, James Carey and Campbell Drake, Eugenia Lim, Dominic Redfern, Martine Corompt, Robbie Rowlands, Jake Walker and Zoe Scoglio.
The exhibition is free and runs from Wednesday 10 – Saturday 27 October (Sunday to Thursday 10am – 6pm, Friday and Saturday from 10am – 9pm) at Schoollhouse Studios, 99-97 Nicholson Street, Abbotsford, VIC.
