Fatimah Kabba was a little tired of people misunderstanding the graphic design profession, so she decided to do something about it. Her solution takes the form of a board game, The Pitch – The Game of Graphic Design. The game resembles Monopoly but design tasks replace properties.
She explains the concept: “All great design begins with one thing: a great idea. This idea is the root of every well produced, beautiful, or savvy execution. Whether it’s the representation of a brand by understanding the audience, the consideration of a book’s content when creating a cover design, or the basis of a political campaign that goes on to influence millions. As designers we have the ability to influence a world that is more aware of and impacted by design than it realises.”
With the game, she hopes to make design more accessible to non-creatives. She currently has it up on funding platform Kickstarter in order to raise funds for production.

This sounds like a wonderful idea. I’m old enough to have grown up on board games before all the digital/computer stuff took over. And this is one I’d love to try.
Fortunately digital/computer has NOT taken over. There is a huge resurgence in the field of boardgames, with hundreds of new titles published every year. These are not the Monopoly-clones of yesteryear but great, original designs with engaging gameplay and great artwork. Head over to boardgamegeek.com and discover a whole new world!
