An evening with Lady Gaga

An evening with Lady Gaga

It’s hard to believe that The Monster Ball arrives on our shores less than 12 months after our beloved Stefani Germanotta (better known in some circles as Lady Gaga) had the particularly undignified responsibility of warming audiences up for Pussycat Dolls. In retrospect, it’s also hard to believe that prior to the events of March 24, 2010, I was a Lady Gaga sceptic. My how things have changed.

For all the faux controversy and Herald Sun hysteria (seriously, how would you explain a ‘disco stick’ to YOUR 12-year old?), Gaga delivers a show so outrageous and so over-the-top that it pulls you into its thrall. It’s a spectacle of multimedia, costume, colour and sound. It’s a sensory overload – utterly mesmerising, and probably the fastest 120 minutes I’ve ever experienced. The audience – a sea of hair ribbons (and one particularly ingenious hair telephone), lightening bolt face-paint and sequinned shoulder pads, lapped up every moment.

The last time I was standing in Rod Laver arena, I witnessed a certain Britney Spears slump flaccidly whilst struggling to match the movement of her lips to the words of her songs. Consider this the antithesis.

At one point, I turned to my friend and commented on the uncanny resemblance Lady Gaga has to an early-90s Madonna. Aside from the immediate similarities (petit bottle blonde Italian-American with New York accent in a studded conical brassiere), The Monster Ball serves as testament that Lady Gaga, like Madge, is no flash in the pan. We have ourselves the makings of an institution.

Madonna and Kylie did it better, first, and with more class.
