Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop: Opening Night Party

The cool and the cooler turned out in numbers to herald the arrival of Exit Through The Gift Shop, aka the Banksy Film, at ACMI last Thursday night. Less a film about the street artiste himself and more a prankumentary on street art and the now iconic artists filling the ranks of the elite, the crowd cared little for the fact behind the flick, opting instead to enjoy the general celebration of counter-culture and the free booze.

Appropriately, the after party – held by the good folks at Madman Entertainment – was staged at Misty bar and surrounding laneways. Hosier Lane, along with Rutledge Lane, have always been known for the Citylights Projects; add a little graff/stencil work and a few Shepard Fairey posters and BAM! instant party.

  1. Banksy is a genius.

Is it me or do others agree, Banksy made a spectacle of the stupidity of those who use street art for the quick buck and the Americans who buy into the hype that gives street art the notoriety label? It´s been argued that “Banksy went off brand” by commercially publicizing the film but I think he had to in order to get his message out there to the “wannabe” art buyers. Had he publicized the film via underground methods, his message would not have reached his targeted audience.

Do others have another take on this?
