Jeffrey C. Ng, aka jeffstaple is a man that needs little introduction, but we will give you one anyway. With his hands in just about everything, this legendary 33-year-old NY graphic, web and clothing designer, artist, DJ, writer and entrepreneur has an international following, is highly respected and has himself become a brand.

The founder and owner of Staple Design, Staple Clothing and Reed Space boutique, jeffstaple is coming to Melbourne this weekend to head a stirring panel of keynote speakers where he will cover different areas of interest to the streetwear/fashion industry at the tradeshow and public expo Buffet.

Hello Jeff. Your Pigeon Dunk’s for Nike caused a bit of a storm when they were released in 2005, and since then you have worked on several shoe offerings. Could you please tell me some more about your passion for designing footwear/sneakers.
Well I’ve always been a major sneakerhead since I was a kid really. And whenever I had odd jobs as a kid, the entire purpose was really for buying sneakers. It was some weird obsession I had even before it was cool to be a sneaker collector. In fact, in my entire high school, there was really only 1 other kid into kicks like me. So being able to design footwear for other companies now is truly a blessing. Especially since I didn’t go to school for footwear or product design. I didn’t go applying for work at footwear companies. They actually came to me! That is still amazing to me.

Perhaps now more than ever, so many artists are collaborating with fashion houses. What do you believe makes for a successful collaboration and adversely a bad one?
I think a good collaboration utilises strengths in both parties. Strengths that may not be present in the other party. So by coming together, it improves on the original somehow. I also think the two parties have to genuinely be into each other. If collaboration is done just for business reasons, and there’s no real passion behind it, I think it comes through in the final product.

Having said that, if you could match up any artist/designer with any fashion house/product, who and what would it be and why?
Banksy x McDonalds. I think it would really flip people out.

Reed Space

Reed Space

Your company Staple Design owns and operates Reed Space in NYC. With so many boutiques around, how did you become a major player in the game and what was your point of difference?
I don’t think you have to set out to find a point of difference. Everyone is unique. Each and every person was created differently from the person next to them. Hence, if you create something that is genuinely from inside you, it will inherently be unique and different. For Reed Space, I just asked myself, “What is missing in this world?”, “Where would I want to shop?” I just answered those questions and created Reed Space from that.

What did you want to be when you were a child?
An astronaut.

It’s now been almost 13 years since your first T-shirt order  – what advice would you give to aspiring designers, wanting to get their worked noticed.
I think you have to determine what and where you want to be right from the start. Mind you, there is no wrong answer though. You want to have a hobby? You want to have some fun? You want a creative outlet? That’s cool. Or. Do you want to be grossing $5million in 3 years? You want to have international distribution? You want a fragrance licensing deal in 10 years? That’s cool too. But those answers set you on completely different paths.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Each time I see someone wearing Staple…or holding a Reed Space shopping bag, I still get goose bumps that are inexplicable.

What are you working on at the moment? What is next for jeffstaple?
Putting the finishing touches on my talk for Buffet in Melbourne!
