Running until Sunday May 3, the Art Book Fair will gather local and international book designers and publishers to exhibit and sell art, architecture, design and self-published titles in the NGV’s Great Hall. New York’s Printed Matter (bookshop, publisher and curator of the New York Art Book Fair and LA Art Book Fair) will be joined by Japanese publishers HeHe, plus a curated selection of titles from the 2014 Tokyo Art Book Fair. Local talent will be represented by publishers including Brad Haylock’s Surplluss, Dawn Press print studio, Gertrude Contemporary and more.

The fair will also run a dream program of free public talks on independent, DIY and digital publishing, as well as book signings, performances and workshops. On Saturday, RMIT Design Futures Lab is hosting a symposium on independent publishing and the contribution it can make to the future of the cultural sector, featuring special guest Stuart Bailey (Bulletins of The Serving Library, Dot Dot Dot magazine). The Melbourne Writers Festival director Lisa Dempster will be in conversation with if:book’s Simon Groth about digital literature, the 24-hour process behind if:book, and how digital technology is changing the future of books. On Sunday, Printed Matter’s acting director Max Schumann will deliver a keynote on the possibilities of the artist book.
