ACMI announces major video game exhibition

125 playable games, 40 profiles on local and international developers and a dip into the history from the arcade era through to the latest console and mobile game technology. It’s all about video games next winter at ACMI.

Curated by Conrad Bodman, Game Masters, is part of ACMI’s Winter Masterpieces exhibition and couldn’t have come at a better time, considering Australian households spent $1.7 billion on video games and consoles last year.

The exhibition will be split into three gaming ‘eras’: the arcade era; game masters and the indies (with each era featuring major influencing designers and games).

The arcade era will be represented by designers such as Tomohiro NishiKado (Japan – Space Invaders, 1978), Ed Logg (USA, Asteroids, 1979), Tori Iwatani (Japan – Pac-Man, 1980) and Yu Suzuki (Japan, Hang On, 1983).

Game masters includes more contemporary designers such as Paulina Bozek (Poland/Canada, SingStar, 2004), Yuji Naka and the Sonic team (Japan, Sonic the Hedgehog, 1991),  Alex Rigopulos (USA, Guitar Hero, 2005) and Tim Schafer (USA, Full Throttle, 1984).

The exhibition will also look at the rise of independent games designers such as Jenova Chen (China, USA, Flower, 2009) and Matsaya Matsuura (Japan, PaRappa the Rapper, 1996) and Melbourne-based Firemint (Flight Control, 2009).

Apart from the workshops, lectures, and visiting developers (Peter Molyneux), if you’re up for a dance-off, there may just be a giant dance stage (featuring Alex Rigopulos’ Dance Central 2 – 2011).

Peter Molyneux isn’t really just a “gamer”. Describing him as the head of one of the worlds biggest game development studios Lionhead (developer of the ‘Fable’ series) might be better?

This looks great though. Thanks for the heads up!
