A small number of this year’s 32nd edition of American Illustration have been (suitably) decorated by a selection of 45 American artists and illustrators. Curated by the Creative Director of Bloomberg Businessweek, Richard Turley, the naked hardcovers of 288 new issues were individually hand drawn, scribbled, painted and stamped over from a studio space in New York.

Regarded by creative professionals as the “books of record”,  American Illustration showcases a year of outstanding  illustration from a variety of creative disciplines including; editorial, advertising, book, poster design, animation, fine art, as well as unpublished student work.

This year’s illustrated covers all  share a tactile look and feel due to the textured off-white paper used for covering. “I wanted these books to feel hefty and valuable, to be proper pieces of serious design.” explains  Turley. ” The heavy covering material is almost the only similarity that the defaced issues share. The artists who have created finished covers for American Illustration 32 have worked using a vast variety of mediums and techniques, expressing 45 very different styles on to 288 copies of the same book.”
