Australian Print Workshop

If you haven’t come across it already, the Australian Print Workshop (APW), based in Melbourne, is a not-for-profit organisation which provides emerging and established artists with access to printmaking equipment and expertise. Services cover a series of projects, exhibitions, collaborations and workshops throughout the year.

APW’s Summer School program of printmaking classes for January and February 2013 has been announced. Check below for times, dates and prices or download the program here. All classes take place at 210 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy in Melbourne at the Australian Print Workshop’s headquarters.

Relief Printing
Linocut + Wood Block
Tutor: Simon White

Cost $595 (including all materials and excursion)

Explore the bold and graphic nature of multi-colour wood and lino block printing. Learn how to prepare wood and lino blocks, cut an image, and print a limited edition. Participants are shown methods of cutting, inking and rolling-up, and registration techniques to produce a reduction lino block and two-colour wood blocks. Use APW’s antique Columbian and Albion relief presses to print your own small edition.

Etching II
Aquatint + Sugar-Lift

An opportunity to explore intaglio’s richness and diversity through the creation of tonal imagery. Discover how to paint directly onto the copper etching plate to create painterly marks and use acid like watercolour. Perfect for artists who enjoy the freedom of using the brush. Develop the skills to use aquatint, sugar-lift, spit-bite and open bite techniques. Experiment with ways of drawing and printing the plates to produce rich, tonal images. The class covers plate preparation, etching, paper preparation and printing a small edition.

Collograph & Carborundum Printing

Discover new and fascinating ways of expression with this versatile and exciting
printmaking medium. Explore the construction of a collaged matrix to produce a printable plate without the use of acid. Collograph and carborundum printmaking produces plates that can be printed as intaglio or relief images, or as combinations of the two. Learn how to use cardboard as the primary material to create prints of vibrant richness and colour.

Colour etching

Cost: $595 (including all materials and excursion)

Learn the fundamentals of making a multi-plate etching. Explore multi-plate printing from copper plates and perspex plates, and learn registration methods and plate-wiping techniques. Produce colour multi-plate etchings with processes such as a la poupée, chine collé and colour roll-up and have the opportunity to explore enhanced creative options by
experimenting with colour. The class covers plate preparation, etching, paper preparation and printing a small edition.
