Blood, a cultural compendium by Suzanne Boccalatte

Trunk Volume Two: Blood, a cultural compendium curated and published by Suzanne Boccalatte, celebrates its launch on Thursday 18 April, 2013 in Melbourne. Blood dissects a body of themes that includes murder, sex, vampires, poetry and even recipes. Co-edited by Suzanne Boccalatte and Dr. Meredith Jones, the volume was inspired by a fascination with the literal inner-workings of human life and the body.

To mark the book’s launch, Suzanne Boccalatte will collaborate with Aesop. Throughout May, the brand’s stores in Paddington, Sydney, and Prahran, Melbourne, will host the title alongside their range of skin, hair and body care. Striking blood-themed window displays will complement the stores’ unexpected literary offering. During the book’s Aesop tenancy, Trunk will contribute 20 per cent of the sale of each title to the Red Cross Blood Service.

Trunk volumes are emblematic of Suzanne Boccalatte’s unbridled creative energies and impressive imagination: the critically acclaimed first edition, Hair, was recently made available in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art.

Of her pursuits, Boccalatte says: “I’ve always been a curious person and I love challenging expectations. Trunk sits at the crossroads where art, culture and society collide.”

And of her treasured project, she explains: “Trunk is a visual and psychological feast. This volume looks for distortions and metaphors on the topic of blood, from bruises and bloodlines, to historic moments of bloodshed, such as Jackie Kennedy’s blood-spattered Chanel suit – a horrifying exposition of her husband’s murder. Master works by Goya, Frida Kahlo and Caravaggio feature on Blood’s pages beside art and literature by Shaun Gladwell, Mike Parr, Petrina Hicks, William Yang and Trent Parke, and prose by Kirrilly Thompson, Rebecca Huntley and Katy Evans-Bush.”

The leather-bound crimson volume will be available for purchase online at Boccalatte Makes Books, Perimeter Books, and from Aesop signature stores in Paddington and Prahran.

A launch for the book, featuring Suzanne Boccalatte will take place at the Prahran Aesop store will take place this Thursday, 18th of April.
