Create Awards 2014 launch party: 10 years of trophies!

Despite an intermittently wet (and constantly humid) evening, last night saw a brilliant turnout to the Create Awards launch party at No Vacancy Gallery, Melbourne—a celebration of the new 2014 awards program and recognition of the nine years that came before it.

To mark the Award’s 10th birthday, desktop raided the Create Awards archive and pulled out the past winners and highly commended entries and placed a selection on show at the party—little pieces of Australian design history, like David Pidgeon’s Heide Honey (a simple packaging piece that gained international acclaim back in 2006) and Buro North’s super-sustainable X-Mas tree (now a collector’s item) — a studio initiative that caused such a stir in 2008, the studio had to stop producing them before they were completely swamped. More recent winners, like RE’s Steve Li acupuncture cards and A View From Here’s New Moon motion piece for Seoul Square, were also highlighted at the party.

The full rollout of the Create Awards 2014 branding campaign by Andrew Robertson (last year’s Emerging Talent and Project of The Year winner) was also revealed, with the focus of the campaign on the space between the realities of commercial expectations and design’s incredible social potential. Posters displaying the contrast between ‘what makes design what design makes‘, ‘who observes design design observes who‘, ‘why we design — we design why‘, and ‘how design changes — design changes how‘ will be used throughout print and digital campaigns in the lead up to the November awards night.

Editor Bonnie Abbott addressed the crowd at the party with some of the changes to the Create program, including updates to the judging structure and emphasis on contact with industry. She also announced that in the coming weeks, desktop will be forming an advisory board, consisting of professional designers from all over the country, as a way to keep desktop as informed, relevant and thorough as possible for its readers.
