Getty Images offers free image library to bloggers

Getty Images has announced the launch of a new ‘embed’ tool that will allow bloggers and reporters to embed and share images for non-commercial use on websites, blogs and social media channels, free of copyright.

“This new Getty Images embed capability will open users up to a huge new creative repository in a simple, legal way,” said Raanan Bar-Cohen, senior vice president of commercial services at Automattic, the company behind “We look forward to seeing all the amazing ways that our users can take advantage of this new access.”

It’s one way that the unregulated broadcast of copyrighted material can begin to be fairly used and shared online. It is near impossible to monitor the use of an image online, and many bloggers credit photographs with the source, misunderstanding that permission is needed, not recognition. But with Getty’s move, a link back through to Getty is now enough to fulfil copyright and IP policy. The link back to Getty is to encourage further licensing for commercial use.
