Hands-on typography workshop

Two full-day typography workshops aimed at design professionals, students and anyone who wants to learn more about handlettering and type anatomy are being held in Newcastle this November.

The workshops are being run by Wayne Thompson, type designer and principal of Australian Type Foundry who has over 100 typefaces to his name, and Gemma O’Brien, a typographer and illustrator represented by The Jacky Winter Group who has earned a reputation for fine typography through her blog For The Love of Type.

Being held on 1 and 2 November at The Roost, the workshops will cover some theory of humanist construction in type, followed by inspiring examples and discussion. Attendees will then put pen to paper, completing a series of drawing exercises that are designed to provide an enhanced understanding of character anatomy and interaction. Different writing tools will also be explored.

Participants will leave with new drawing techniques and a personally finished piece created under the direct instruction of Gemma and Wayne.
