Higher Order

Higher Order is a wonderful new project that will provide art and design workshops for kids.

A rotating roster of professional designers and artists will collaborate with trained teachers to create a vibrant, fun, and educational program. The first series of workshops kick off in the upcoming autumn holidays with tickets strictly limited to 25 per workshop – ensuring a focused and personal learning environment.

These workshops are a great opportunity for kids to connect with some of the best talent in the country while learning new skills and getting introduced to design thinking. The first round of Higher Order workshops have been carefully curated and will feature comic making with Sonny Day (We Buy Your Kids), prop-making and styling with designer Georgia Perry and photographer Jason Plater, a screen-printing workshop with Kate Banazi, typography and street art with Numskull, and a paper craft workshop with Kitiya Palaskas – which will turn into a end of week party.

Kitiya Palaskas is a craft-based designer and creative workshop teacher currently living and working in Sydney, Australia. When she's not teaching craft classes or writing DIY and educational small business articles, you can find her making tactile, playful and colourful props, costumes, and decorations for the creative industry.

Numskull is an Australian based artist, working out of Sydney in a variety of fields and mediums including painting, sculpture, illustration and large scale murals. Over the past 15 years, Numskull has been leaving his mark and creating public work wherever he travels. His unique imagery has become a collage of study focussing on colour hierarchy, typography, abstract heroism and idolism.

Kate Banazi trained in fashion and illustration at Central St Martins before chosing silkscreen prinitng as her preferred medium. She has worked with a diverse range of clients from fashion and advertising through to editorial and music. She is represented in Australia by The Jacky Winter Group.

Georgia Perry is a Sydney based creative, working across a broad range of media, from illustration & animation to photography & installation. She specialises in projects for the youth, fashion & music realms and is known for her bold use of colour and simple, often humorous graphics.

Each workshop will feature a different project and focus on a range of different skills, resulting in participants developing the ability to tackle complex design problems as well as creating products to take home.

This first series of workshops will run from 15th of April through to the 19th of April, at Studio 2204 in Marrickville, NSW. These Junior Create Workshops are aimed at children between the ages of 8 and 12.

Founded by Lorena Mercado and Jessika Steiner (both qualified educators with strong connections to Australia’s art and design industries) Higher Order will continue to evolve it’s platform of high-engagement and participatory learning. Future workshops and events for young adults, design professionals, and design teachers are being planned for Sydney and Melbourne later in the year.
