ISTD Student Assessment Scheme

If you’re a design student and are interested in having your work reviewed by an industry leader, then the International Society of Typographic Designers’ (ISTD) Student Assessment Scheme may be well worth looking into.

The ISTD is a professional body which is run by and for typographers, graphic designers and educators, aiming to establish and maintain typographic standards worldwide. The society recognises the need to share experience and dialogue with ISTD members, design students and the industry, hence the development of the student assessment scheme.

The student assessment is an annual event with submissions accepted from six countries, including UK, Ireland, South Africa and Lebanon. Australasia’s second student assessment was held in late 2010 at Swinburne University, Prahran with 12 assessors involved including Stephen Banham, Dominic Hofstede and Nicki Wragg, reviewing 65 projects. The team dished out 20 passes, 11 merits and only one commendation.

The ISTD stresses that the student assessement is not a competition. The ISTD website outlines that, “if the work passes assessment the student is seen to have expressed a high level of achievement and is offered ISTD. It is seen more as an additional qualification.” The scheme is more suitable for final year students, with submissions based on an individual basis.

See below for images of a couple of the projects which passed the assessment:
