Foursquare check in from outer space!

Social media is definitely not going away – in the year 2010, millions of people around the globe are embracing it, regularly using Facebook, Twitter and other social networking tools, including Foursquare.

NASA has wasted no time in adopting social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter, as astronauts have been tweeting from space since January 2009. Soichi Noguchi, a Japanese astronaut used Twitpic in earlier this year to send pictures of Earth as seen from space.

It’s now more than 40 years ago since the Apollo 11 space flight landed the first humans on Earth’s Moon and just over a week ago, NASA astronaut, Douglas Wheelock, checked into Foursquare from space!  Douglas Wheelock is orbiting the Earth aboard the International Space Station and his Foursquare check in, sent via a message from his Twitter account @Astro _Wheels, unlocked the NASA Explorer Badge.

If you’re not planning a trip to outer space in the near future you’ll still be able to unlock the NASA Explorer Badge by checking in to NASA related venues, including the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
