Melbourne is about to be treated to a retrospective on the graphic design activity of one of Australia’s closest (and most culturally diverse) neighbours. 10 years of winning graphic design work from China, which was last year exhibited at London Design Week, will be appearing at a pop-up show, launched by Jason Little, Vince Frost and Michaela Webb, in December.

Graphic Design in China, or GDC, has become a guiding light — the most influential large-scale comprehensive design campaign in great China area. Started by Shenzhen Graphic Design Association (SGDA) and running since 1992, its biannual competition has documented the rise — as well as the incredible breadth, quality and development — of Chinese design, and “established and opened a platform for global Chinese designers (especially Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao) to show themselves, to share, compete and communicate with others… and written down the glory chapter of Chinese graphic design history, and built up a high recognition and reputation around the world.”

This retrospective GDC Exhibition will demonstrate how Chinese graphic design has evolved over the last decade, showcasing major winning works from 2003 to 2013, covering a wide range of categories, including graphic, interactive, hybrid, space and production design, as well as design in advertising. It presents an in-depth display of the power of Chinese designers, focusing on how they operate within contemporary Chinese society and its commercial environment and cultural heritage.

A short design conference will also take place alongside the show.
