Rykiel’s Graphic Homage

If you didn’t already know, you may have trouble dating these posters, so complete is the vision of the art direction. Conceived by Paris-based designers M/M and shot by Mert Alas and Marcus PiggottSonia, Rykiel’s Fall 2013 line is the first collection released under the artistic direction of Geraldo da Conceição and to mark the occasion, Rykiel sought to pay homage to the bold French midcentury advertising styles of Bernard Villemot and Raymond Savignac.

Distinctive through the uncluttered compositions of graphic shapes and simple geometric abstractions, their work was known for its mild irony and humorous pokes at the advertised material, the pioneers of frivolity within the long line of more serious poster designers and artists that were popular in France since Toulouse-Lautrec.

The work is optimistic, easy and undeniably fun-loving, an apt homage for Rykiel, full of her characteristic lightheartedness. “For me, luxury isn’t just the real thing,” she told Interview magazine, “it’s also fake. Swarovski crystals or real diamonds? It’s a game.”
