Typography Masterclass

With contributions from Mark Gowing, Paul Garbett, Peter McGill, Dr Louise McWhinnie and Alex Tyres, the DIA is holding a Typographic Masterclass in Sydney this weekend.

The Class takes place at the Australian Museum for a small group of experienced designers, providing a chance to learn, discuss and develop new approaches and responses to and with typographic design. If you’re interested… the final class is this Saturday, limited to 15 designers. Tickets available here.

Peter McGill
Peter McGill is a passionate and skilled typographer who has pushed the boundaries in visual communication since the 1970s. Along with other leading Australian typographers, Paul Sodie and Mike Chandler he has contributed to Australia’s reputation for innovative design. Billy Blue College of Design currently describes Peter on their website… “Peter is a typographer. He is also an art director, designer, studio manager, traffic manager and production manager. He believes his knowledge in all these areas helps him be a better typographer. He has worked on award winning campaigns for MBF, Bankers Trust, Toyota, Australian Tourist Commission, Volvo, Nike and many more.”

Naughtyfish is an independent graphic design studio based in Sydney, Australia with a focus on identity creation and evolution. They have carved an international reputation for ‘thoughtful and playful’ approach to design. Awards in 2011 AWARD Bronze Pencil – Brochures and Catalogues. Awards in 2010 AGDA National Awards. Mark Gowing’s work has been exhibited and published around the world. Mark has received three AGDA Pinnacle awards from AGDA as well as numerous local and international awards including New York Type Directors Club excellence awards, Tokyo Type Directors Club excellence awards, In 2008 Mark became the first Australian to win the Gold Medal at the 21st International Poster Biennale in Warsaw.

Alex Tyers

Alex Tyers is an award winning information design specialist with over 21 years of practical experience in the field. His studio, one of very few within Australia specialising in information design, has been operating since 1999. He has completed major information design projects for both the private and Government sectors. Alex has written for a number of design publications including Open Manifesto, Information Design Journal and Desktop magazine. He has presented papers at the international IIID Vision Plus conference, in Austria in 2007 and most recently in 2010 in India. He was elected state councillor for the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) in 2005/06, and is a member of International institute for Information Design (IIID).

Dr. Louise McWhinnie

Over the last 26 years, Louise has lived and worked as a designer and design educator in three countries within three continents. She has worked as a senior graphic designer within London design consultancies and as a Design Course Director within the UK and also Asia. Louise’s ongoing teaching and research encompasses the broad field of typography, with a particular focus of letterform and font design and the role of culture within typography and the typographic vernacular.
