STUDIO:  Mia & Jem
DESIGNER(S):  Jeremy Matthews
CLIENT:  Every Mother Counts

This poster was designed by Jeremy Matthews for Every Mother Counts, a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising awareness about and gathering support to combat Post Partum Hemorrhage (PPH) which is the leading cause of pregnancy-related death in the world, including in the US.

The poster uses the ubiquitous red cross symbol to cast a shadow that looks as if it was coming from a gravestone, which suggests that the difference between life and death often comes down to access and money – and that this epidemic is preventable. It also contains the following explanatory text: Every day approximately 800 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Almost all maternal deaths (99%) occur in developing countries, highlighting the gap between rich and poor. Most deaths could have been prevented through access to appropriate medical care and health services.
