It happened on this day

Below is Sydney-based designer Gabby Lord’s response to the 2012 International Society of Typographic Design (ISTD) competition. The applicants had to chose a date in time, develop a sound strategy and demonstrate typographic excellence. Gabby’s response:

“I chose the day 24 June and in 1978 this was the first Mardi Gras Parade in Taylor Square. The continuing debate surrounding the gay community and their ongoing fight for same sex marriage is one of the most contemporary issues concerning social progression.

Twenty-two years later on the same day, Julia Gillard was sworn in as the first female Prime Minister of Australia. My submission details how this day directly links Gillard, Barack Obama and many other influential people and events to the first Mardi Gras parade and this idea of social progression.

Delving specifically into how all these factors relate to the Gay Rights Movement, my response is a statement of how social progression is inevitable; it only takes time and vision.”
