Reinvention of the thesis through image and design

Constructing and collating a thesis is no simple feat, years of work can be put into a single piece of writing and while masses of text may appear enticing to the more academic among us, where does that leave our visual thinkers?

Ricardo Ferrol is a Portuguese and German student studying for his Masters degree in Art Direction at ECAL in Lausanne, Switzerland. Created at Hochschule für Gestaltung (Offenbach University of Art and Design, Germany) in collaboration with colleague Johannes Bauer, Ferrol’s recently completed Bachelor’s thesis (featured below) captures the dynamic relationship between image and text — harnessing the strength of both mediums and using one to amplify the other.

The publication “reflects on the complex term of identity,” by investigating the essence of individual detail, character and biological features. It contains “various interviews with people like actors, plastic surgeons, psychologists or designers that get in touch with ‘identity’ in different ways,” with all images and text crafted specifically for the published research project.
