Student exhibition celebrates the Birrarung

Depictions of the shorelines and character of Melbourne’s Yarra have been interpreted by the Communication Design students of MADA (Monash Art Design and Architecture). Under the direction of illustrator Ned Culic, students were briefed to illustrate one of the features of the river.

Designed as a series of 18 posters, the collection, titled Birrarung (the Wurrundjeri name for the Yarra River), was recently exhibited at the university gallery, and approaches the river from urban, historical, type-driven, ecological and emotional perspectives.

The students involved included Beatrice Teja, Chu Chen, Georgia Upperton, Jessica Bong, Julia Chapman, Louise Walker, Man Yuen Wong, Megan Mitchell, Moyan Liu, Natalie Tirant, Paul Failla, Paula Panopoulos, Sam Cooper, Sarah Fern, Saskia Agius, Yasmin Yusuf Les, Ying Gao and Yingshan Li.
