Collider design first Sturgeon magazine

STUDIO:  Collider
DESIGNER(S):  Mitchell Brown, Clemens Habicht
CLIENT:  Artbank

Sydney design collective Collider has recently published the first issue of Sturgeon magazine. Edited and published by Artbank, the new biannual magazine observes and celebrates the culture surrounding contemporary art in Australia. After rebranding Artbank early in 2013, Collider was commissioned to establish Sturgeon’s logotype through to art direction and design of the publication.

“Type is set confidently with acute clumsiness, providing a contemporary slant (and intrinsically Australian tone) to an otherwise traditional layout,” Collider report. The magazine’s masthead, set simply in a heavier weight of the Founders Grotesk family, continues this ‘minimal intervention’ across Sturgeon’s typography.

Issue one features a gatefold cover with recto/verso portraits of Graeme Sturgeon by Collider collaborator Clemens Habicht and a catalogue-style ‘blogzine’ insert by Melbourne artist Kenny Pittock.
