We take a look at the AGDA Awards Compendium by Hofstede

Melbourne design studio, Hofstede has recently completed the AGDA Awards Compendium, the first release for AGDA since its Biennial restructure and rebrand in 2012.

Hofstede developed the publication for AGDA, a pro bono undertaking, who requested a printed compendium to accompany its digital platform for the awards (developed by BTP). The pared back format and scale of the new compendium reflects the organisation’s recent ‘back to basics’ philosophy, which is in contrast to the previous editions, utilising a foiled letter ‘A’ to reflects the theme of ‘unity in diversity’, visible in different, responsive styles throughout the book as a section divider.

“The format and scale is deliberately modest,” writes the studio. “Considerable time was invested in developing a flexible modular grid suitable for the presentation of widely disparate imagery.”

The book’s inside back cover features a reprint of a stirring call to action from legendary Australian designer Les Mason. The piece, originally printed in the inaugural Australian Commercial Artists Association (ACIAA) Annual in 1963, appeals for higher industry standards — something Hofstede utilised for its remaining relevance for the industry today.

The project was developed by Dominic Hofstede, Tom Sabbatucci and Paul Mylecharane, and design assistant Lachlan Siu.
